It is necessary to destroy the 2009 MacBook to save it,
at the Walnut Creek Apple Store,
by clearing the hard drive (fortunately almost everything backed up on the external storage devices at home and around), and re-installing an operating system, but rather than reloading the Leopard operating system
(which had been kept to older Tiger visuals),
the re-install turns out to be Yosemite -- a non- skeuomorphic environment (i.e. "flat-graphic design"), evidently designed by two-year olds. It is the deal-breaker, in terms of using the old machine as the go-to-computer. In addition to all of the files and added programs gone, this new, ugly operating system will take time to learn (running out of time at the store, an offer is made to re-install the older O.S., but, upon return, must admit that the new version probably has some merits). Further, in just two days, the (admittedly only slightly) newer 2012 MacBook Pro has been finally proving its overall merits. Make an appointment several days hence to return re fixing bugs in the newer machine and depart with a clearer sense of what's next.
